About our Conductor. . .

Ray ReynoldsRaymond R. Reynolds received his degree in Music Education BME from Northern Michigan University.  He has held teaching positions with Marquette Public Schools, Ishpeming Public Schools and is currently in his fifteenth year of teaching with the Alpena Public Schools.  During his tenure in Alpena, his junior high bands consistently received top honors at district and state levels, earning 82 Division I ratings.  In January 1994 and January 1999, his 8th Grade Symphonic Band

was a featured concert band at the Midwestern Conference on School Vocal and Instrumental Music in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  Raymond was selected as conductor for the District 9 Junior High Honor’s Band in January 1995 and the District 2 Junior Honor’s Band in January 2003.  His colleagues nominated him for Director of the Year from District 9 in 1998.

Mr. Reynolds is an active member of the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association and has held several offices at both district and state levels.  He is an active adjudicator for the State of Michigan and an active member of the American School Band Director’s Association.  Reynolds has enjoyed numerous invitations to be guest conductor, performer and clinician at various schools throughout Michigan.  In 2003, he established and was appointed musical director of the Alpena Area Community Youth Band and was honored with the distinction of Distinguished Graduate of Alpena Community College.  In 2004, Reynolds was appointed Director of Winds for the Alpena Symphony Orchestra and has Co-Directed the ASO since 2005.  He has also enjoyed conducting the Alpena City Band for the past sixteen years.  Raymond and his wife, Leslie, have two children: Ryan, age 17 and Kathryn, age 15.

About our Soloist. . .

Loretta BeyerLoretta Beyer was born and raised in Zimbabwe, Africa, the daughter of missionaries.  Beyer moved to Alpena in 1978 after graduating from Houghton College in New York.  She has been adjunct music faculty at Alpena Community College and has taught piano privately ever since.  Over the years she has been involved musically in the community in many ways, including accompanying for musicals, solo and ensemble competitions, and recitals.  In addition Beyer serves as church organist, adjudicator and as a concert soloist.  She counts herself fortunate to be able to earn a living doing what she loves, and has found Alpena to be a wonderful town in which to live and encourage young people with her passion and love of music.
